June 2010 Salty Towers Update

Hello to friends of Salty Towers:

A smattering of news and updates for what's going on around Sooke and beyond.

The Flynn family recently took a cruise to Alaska...grandparents, grown-up kids, and grandkids, all had a wonderful time. Spectacular glaciers!

While away, a teacher from Ottawa visited Sooke and hiked the Juan de Fuca Trail, posting this amusing article: "Terror in the Outhouse"


And back in Sooke, it is time once again for the Stinking Fish Studio Tour, highlighting the beautiful creations of Vancouver Island artists in East Sooke and Metchosin.

Finally, of course, a fishing report ... Neil has been out chasing fish lately, catching quite a few smaller spring salmon and coho salmon (6-8 pounds). There is a regulation in place right now that limits chinook salmon to 45-67 cm (the "slot limit"), unless they are hatchery born. Starting June 19th, anglers can also keep one wild chinook salmon larger than this. So, for now, lots of nice dinner-sized fish, and then some trophy hunting starting in a couple of weeks. And the crabbing in Sooke Harbour is great, good size Dungeness crabs and lots of them.

Fishing regulation:
* UPDATE Fraser River Chinook: Subareas 19-1 to 19-4, 20-5 and a portion of 20-4 from a point at the mouth of Jordan River: Effective June 3rd until Jun 18th, 2010 the daily limit is two (2) Chinook Salmon per day which may be wild or hatchery marked between the size limit of 45 cm and 67 cm or hatchery marked only Chinook over 67 cm in length

Then effective June 19 until July 15, 2010 the daily limit is two (2) Chinook Salmon per day of which only one (1) Chinook may be greater than 67 cm. The minimum size limit in these areas is 45 cm.
